Account selection for outbound: rank evidence and fit before list size

Select accounts using the strength of relevant evidence and your ability to serve them. A longer list is not automatically a better starting point.

Who this helps: Business owners and operators planning audience, offer, ownership and review decisions.

Define the decision

An ICP defines the kind of account you want; account selection applies that definition to real organizations. The process should preserve why each account was included and what still needs verification. That makes later campaign feedback useful instead of leaving a collection of unexplained company names.

Work through the procedure

  1. Apply the current ICP and exclusions to each candidate organization.
  2. Record one or two specific facts supporting inclusion, with source and observation date.
  3. Separate eligible accounts from those awaiting identity, ownership or service-fit checks.
  4. Prioritize a manageable cohort and reserve a review reason for accounts not selected.

Worked example

The following is a synthetic example for this procedure, not a customer result or performance benchmark.

Account A: relevant workflow confirmed; delivery geography supported → eligible
Account B: similar name but domain mismatch → hold for identity review
Account C: active client conversation → exclude from prospecting
Account D: no source for assumed project → research needed
Only Account A enters the first cohort.

Read the result

The selection record prevents researchers from treating every uncertainty as positive evidence. It also avoids wasting later copy review on accounts that should never have entered the campaign. A held account can become eligible after verification without erasing why it was previously held.

Check before moving on

  1. Check parent, subsidiary and brand relationships when scope matters.
  2. Preserve active-opportunity and suppression exclusions.
  3. Recheck temporary signals before launching a delayed cohort.

Limits and next action

This is an account-research workflow, not a native predictive ranking model. Selection quality must be assessed through the evidence and subsequent conversations. Do not convert a hand-assigned priority label into an unsupported probability of purchase.
