Cold email bot clicks: investigate automated activity before scoring intent
A recorded click is evidence of a URL request, not sufficient evidence of buying intent. Security inspection and other automated activity can complicate interpretation.

Define the decision
Microsoft documents URL scanning and link rewriting in Safe Links. That establishes that security systems interact with email URLs, but it does not identify the origin of any particular event in your campaign. Use available timestamps and event context to investigate patterns without claiming certainty from a single signal.
Work through the procedure
- Look for clusters such as several links requested within a very short interval after sending.
- Compare the pattern with later human replies or an explicitly completed next step.
- Label suspicious events as uncertain when the available telemetry cannot distinguish automation from a person.
- Keep click-derived interest separate from reviewed human responses in campaign reporting.
Worked example
The following is a synthetic example for this procedure, not a customer result or performance benchmark.
Message sent: 09:00:00
Three different links requested: 09:00:01–09:00:02
Human reply: none observed
Classification: suspicious automated pattern, not proven bot identity
Sales action: do not claim the recipient reviewed all three resources.Read the result
The timing is a reason to investigate, not a definitive detection rule. Real users, shared networks and forwarded messages can also complicate logs. A later explicit reply can establish human engagement without proving which earlier requests belonged to that person.
Check before moving on
- Do not create a sales task solely because every link was requested.
- Keep raw events available when applying a documented reporting exclusion.
- Respect recipient security controls and avoid attempts to bypass scanning.
Limits and next action
Zintara does not promise a native bot-classification engine. Microsoft documentation is context for URL inspection, not validation of this example or a universal filter. If telemetry is insufficient, report clicks as uncertain supporting evidence.
