Edit an active email sequence with a clear change boundary
Before editing a live sequence, define which unsent messages should change and which sent messages form immutable history. Pause for review when the change could make pending follow-ups inconsistent.

Who this helps: Campaign owners preparing, monitoring or recovering an outreach sequence.
Define the decision
A sequence is a conversation over time. Replacing the first message's offer while leaving a follow-up that says 'the audit I mentioned' can break that conversation. Different contacts may be on different steps, so one edit can create several recipient experiences. Map those experiences before saving.
Work through the procedure
- Save the current copy and settings in an approved change record, with the date and reason for revision.
- Identify contacts before step one, between steps and already completed. Describe how the proposed edit affects each group.
- Review references, variables, signatures, delays and subject continuity across all remaining steps. Test representative rendered messages.
- Apply the change through supported controls and inspect pending work. If the scope is materially different, consider a separately reviewed campaign for new contacts instead of rewriting an ongoing conversation.
Worked example
The following is a synthetic example for this procedure, not a customer result or performance benchmark.
Change boundary
Old offer: process audit
New offer: implementation workshop
Contact A: no message yet → new sequence may fit
Contact B: audit already offered → workshop follow-up needs explicit context
Contact C: replied positively → human handoff, not a silent offer replacementRead the result
The same text update can be harmless for A and confusing for B. C already needs conversation-specific treatment. A change boundary makes those differences explicit and gives the reviewer a way to approve the edit without assuming every contact starts from an empty history.
Check before moving on
- Verify the saved version, not only the editor's unsaved preview.
- Check whether existing due times or assigned variants changed in the way you intended.
- Keep the previous version available for diagnosis if a recipient reports a mismatch.
Limits and next action
This guide does not promise automatic versioning or rollback. Preserve your own review record when the interface does not provide it. Do not use direct database edits to force active sequence changes; unknown in-flight attempts make that approach particularly difficult to reconcile.
