Google Postmaster Tools: interpret coverage, lag and missing data

Use Google’s sender diagnostics alongside campaign evidence without treating missing data as a clean bill of health.

Reviewed · Examples are illustrative

Who this helps: Operators diagnosing authentication, receiving-policy and delivery failures.

Define the decision

Postmaster views cover Google’s observed traffic and can omit low-volume data. They do not describe every recipient provider or necessarily match your application’s send-date grouping. Record the dashboard’s scope before comparing percentages.

Work through the procedure

  1. Confirm the verified domain and the dashboard’s reporting interval.
  2. Read its metric definition and coverage notes.
  3. Compare authentication or complaint changes with deployment and audience-source changes.
  4. For missing data, investigate coverage before changing infrastructure or increasing volume.

Worked example

The following is a synthetic example for this procedure, not a customer result or performance benchmark.

Campaign report: all recipient providers, current day
Postmaster view: Google-observed traffic, available reporting period
Incorrect comparison: treating the two denominators as identical
Useful comparison: a dated trend alongside known sending changes

Read the result

A blank chart is missing evidence, not evidence of zero complaints or perfect reputation. Likewise, a provider-specific improvement should not be presented as a universal deliverability result.

Check before moving on

  1. Keep the dashboard date and domain in screenshots.
  2. Use the current interface’s metric definitions; older screenshots may differ.

Limits and next action

Do not send extra unwanted mail merely to populate a dashboard. Use controlled message evidence and other operational checks when reporting volume is insufficient.
