Microsoft 365 SMTP AUTH with OAuth: check protocol and permission separately

Verify the OAuth grant, SMTP AUTH policy and mailbox identity before treating a Microsoft connection as ready.

Reviewed · Examples are illustrative

Who this helps: Mailbox owners and administrators validating sending and reply access.

Define the decision

OAuth replaces a password-based authentication method; it does not automatically enable a disabled protocol. A successful Microsoft sign-in can coexist with an SMTP AUTH policy refusal or unavailable IMAP access.

Work through the procedure

  1. Connect the intended mailbox through the Microsoft provider flow.
  2. Confirm the granted application and account with the tenant administrator.
  3. Check whether SMTP AUTH is permitted for that mailbox under current tenant policy.
  4. Test submission and incoming replies separately before assigning the mailbox to a campaign.

Worked example

The following is a synthetic example for this procedure, not a customer result or performance benchmark.

Sign-in: succeeds
SMTP submission: rejected by mailbox policy
IMAP: independently configured
Next action: administrator reviews effective SMTP AUTH policy, without assuming another OAuth login will change it

Read the result

The diagnostic has three layers: identity authorization, protocol availability and actual message behavior. Keep each result separate so a broad connected label does not hide a failed receiving path.

Check before moving on

  1. Use the intended organizational account rather than a personal Microsoft account.
  2. Preserve the complete sanitized protocol error.

Limits and next action

Do not disable tenant-wide security controls as a routine fix. Choose an approved supported mail path with the administrator.
