Unsubscribe link vs reply opt-out: operate both paths clearly
Distinguish a link-based suppression action from a human reply requesting no further contact.

Define the decision
A recipient may use the visible link or reply in ordinary language. Both need a reliable handling path. Offering reply-based removal does not prove that provider-required unsubscribe headers are present.
Work through the procedure
- Test the visible unsubscribe link with a controlled lead.
- Send a separate controlled reply requesting no further contact.
- Verify the reply reaches the correct inbox and is handled according to the suppression workflow.
- Check that all relevant future enrollments respect the resulting exclusion.
Worked example
The following is a synthetic example for this procedure, not a customer result or performance benchmark.
Path A: test contact clicks the unsubscribe link → suppression verified
Path B: test contact replies "please remove me" → reply ingested and suppression reviewed
Release condition: neither path leaves the test contact eligible for another stepRead the result
These tests cover different failure modes: a broken URL versus a disconnected mailbox or missed classification. Keep both results rather than substituting one for the other.
Check before moving on
- Confirm recipient identity before applying a manual action.
- Check the header-based one-click path separately where required.
Limits and next action
Automated language classification can be ambiguous. Give operators a clear review path for requests that do not match expected wording, and do not rely on continued sending as a test.
